The Unseen Cost of Survival: Gaza's Skyrocketing Prices

2 October 2025

Imagine losing your home, your livelihood, and everything you own, only to find that merely moving to a supposedly "safer" area comes with a crushing financial burden. For families forced to move south due to ongoing conflict, the journey itself feels like a punishment.

The Staggering Price Tag of Displacement and Daily Survival

Transportation:

The average cost for a family to displace southwards is a staggering $3,180

  • Single taxi ride: Around $1,000

  • General transport range: $256 to $1,500

  • Quote for a single car: Up to $2,400

  • Truck rental: $2,000

  • Cost to get into a vehicle: $540

The crisis only deepens for those who can make it to the south as makeshift shelters become another commodity beyond reach:

Shelter Costs:

  • Tent Rental: $1,200

  • Tent Purchase: Up to $2,000

  • Tent Purchase (in Rafah): Around $800

  • Small plot of land for a shelter: Approximately $180

Thousands of families are left with no choice but to camp in the open, exposed to the elements.

The next threat comes from the skyrocketing cost of food and essential goods, pushing an entire population towards famine and severe malnutrition:

Food Security Crisis:

  • A 25kg (55lb) bag of flour, a staple food, now costs an astounding $150.

  • A dozen eggs, once affordable, sells for $32 (up from $3.50).

  • Sugar, a necessity, ranges from $80 to $100 per kilogram (up from less than $2).

  • Onions are $9 per kilogram.

  • A single lemon, once a common item, can cost between $5 to $6 (up from $0.50).

Other Critical Needs:

  • Infant formula is $15 a tin, when available, leaving countless babies at risk.

  • A single package of diapers can cost up to $75.

  • Dishwashing liquid is up to $30 a bottle.

  • And if you can find it, gasoline is approximately $25 per litre.

These aren't just numbers; they represent the reality for millions in Gaza. Families, especially children, are struggling to survive each day. With the economy shattered, employment non-existent, and public services severely disrupted, these prices are simply unattainable for most of the population in Gaza.
