The Story Of Qurbani
11 August 2025Qurbani: A Spiritual Reflection on Faith, Sacrifice, and Compassion
Qurbani, or Udhiya, is one of the most profound traditions in Islam. Qurbani is performed during Eid Al-Adha, which falls on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. This sacred act is a reminder of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)’s unwavering faith and submission to Allah (SWT). His willingness to sacrifice his beloved son, Isma’il (AS), is a timeless lesson in devotion, trust, and selflessness.
The Story of Qurbani
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) had a divine vision where he was commanded to offer his son, Isma’il (AS), as a sacrifice. Both the son and the father understood the significance of this act. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) did not question Allah (SWT)’s command and was ready to submit before His will.
As they prepared for the sacred Qurbani, a shaitan tried to dissuade Prophet Ibrahim (AS), saying it was a terrible crime, but Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was unmoved. He stoned shaitan, showing his unwavering faith in Allah (SWT). The act of stoning shaitan symbolises the rejection of temptation and is performed during Hajj.
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) got Isma’il (AS) ready for the sacrifice. As he was about to use his knife, Allah (SWT) showed His divine mercy and replaced Isma’il (AS) with a ram. We remember the ram’s sacrifice every year at Hajj. Muslims across the world honour this legacy each year, and Qurbani is considered a supreme act of Taqwa (God-consciousness).
The Deeper Meaning Behind Qurbani
The true essence of sacrifice lies in sincerity rather than the physical offering. Just as Ibrahim (AS) surrendered to Allah’s command, Qurbani teaches us complete trust in Allah (SWT). Sacrifice is not only physical, but also about letting go of personal ego, desires, and attachments. The meat of the sacrificed animal is distributed to those in need, ensuring that the blessings of Eid Al-Adha reach those who are less fortunate. Qurbani also teaches the importance of Ummah, ensuring that no one is left hungry or forgotten.
